Product Description

Microsoft's Expression Suite promises new levels of power in creating rich dynamic user experiences on the web, and Expression Web Designer is but one program within that suite. It is a powerful web site creation tool, allowing the user to rapidly build up standards-compliant web pages, style them with CSS, add dynamic ASP.NET functionality to them, and publish them to the web, all from the safety of the same program. Enter Foundations of Expression Web Designer, one of the first books available on the subject. The author—expert MS trainer and MVP Cheryl D Wise—starts with the very basics, and then takes the reader up to advanced level through a series of practical real world exercises. Although no knowledge is assumed, the book is carefully written to not be patronizing, and be of use to more advanced web developers and designers wishing to make use of the software, as well as complete beginners.

Customer Reviews

Not for a former Frontpage user3
I manage several web sites built with Microsoft FrontPage and needed to make the transition to Expression Web because my Server provider removed the FP extensions on the Linux platform. I would not class myself as an expert or professional designer, but a typical FP user. I purchased this book because I was aware that Cheryl Wise was a Microsoft MVP for Expression Web, having read her contributions on using Expression Web on the Microsoft MSDN forums. My expectations were high but the reality is the book did not meet my needs. The book is written for a person completely new to web design and it would appear that it will meet the needs of a "newbie". There is no specific help for those migrating from FrontPage. The biggest drawback for a book of this type is that the tutorials must first be downloaded from the books own Internet site. I see this as an extreme inconvenience when most similar books have no problem in providing a CD ROM with the purchase.
Other books I purchased were "Step by Step Microsoft Expression Web" (Chris Leeds) and "Using MS Expression Web" (Jim Cheshire).
I think the Chris Leeds Book is the ideal starter book and best read before moving onto "Special Edition Using Microsoft Expression Web". If you are completely new to web design my view is "Foundations Of Expression Web" does cover ground that would be helpful but if you are not new to web design you will be better served elsewhere.
