Disappointed with this Version of Kaspersky
I've been a user of Kaspersky since Version 6 and had always thought Kaspersky was better than the rest, but this version leaves me disappointed. It's not because the protection offered is bad, but there seems to be some issues that let this down.
Kaspersky like some other rival Anti-virus software on the market uses a HTTP web scanner, which scans web browsing traffic for threats. HTTP Web scanners in theory give an extra layer of protection alongside the standard On-access scanner. The Downside is that there is an impact on web page load performance, but in my experience this can vary greatly between Anti-virus solutions. Bitdefenders and Avasts HTTP scanners are very good and I hardly notice a slowdown, but Kasperskys in my opinion is by far the slowest. It seems to take long to open web pages and some web pages have loaded incorrectly for me like Missing images etc. There is an option within the software to disable this feature and then the websites are fast again for me, but why should a paying customer lose an element of protection because the feature doesn't work properly. Kaspersky 2009 also had this feature, but that worked much better than the 2010 version.
Another feature that is annoying for me is the proactive defence, which helps detect Viruses, Trojans, key loggers etc on their behaviour. While it can help stop these nasties infecting a computer when the Malware type isn't in the Kaspersky database, but I have found it likes to falsely label legitimate programs. It was telling me that something (I know to be safe) was acting suspiciously, but lets say it really was a real threat, Kaspersky offered zero information on what to do with it.
The positives of Kaspersky 2010 is that the start-up times have been decreased and there has been a big improvement on update speed. The Kaspersky 2010 Interface also looks better. I just feel compared to my past experiences of earlier Kaspersky versions, this is a let down for me.
Why are they changing a great product?
This is my third annual Kaspersky Antivirus version. To date I have been a a big fan of Kaspersky Anti Virus (KAV). So what has happened this time? Kaspersky seem to have forgotten this is an anti virus product. It is not to put shackles on your laptop and stop it working. For example, install KAV2010 and if you are running a Slingbox then it stops working after about 10 seconds when you start it. No message, no warning - just stops working. Kaspersky are blocking everything and taking over your laptop. Thankfully I found the solution on a forum - go into several options and add in several times that Slingbox is allowed to run. You can't just go into one option to allow an application not to be blocked.
Will I get KAV2011? No. Would I buy this if I knew what it now does? No. KAV2009 is a far better product. It does what it says on the tin. This feels like it is going the way of Norton and producing bloatware that does more then you want it to. Look at alternatives or you may end up wanting to throw your laptop out of the Window as you appear to be stopped from using it.
Good Protection that just does the job...
You wonder when a new years Anti-Virus programme comes out - what new jingles could this year possibly bring? Well, I'll be honest this product doesnt inspire enthusiasm however it does look like a genuinely solid computer protection program.
Over the years I have had experience of various different virus protection software brands, such as Trend, Norton, Mcafee and also Kaspersky. For many years I used to use Mcafee it was (and likely still is) a good product, however in recent years it has become a bit cumbersome for me. So Kaspersky it was (I suffered a month of both Trend and Norton and decided never to return) I have used the full internet suite for the past year, with this years offering coming with what can only be described as a upgraded dumbed down protection. Due to the lack of a firewall it also requires this installed by another vendor (I chose Komodo).
So down to the product, it comes in the standard packaging, not much to say on that front. Then comes installation, this version offers 3 PC setup. It installed fine on 2 Vista 32-bit laptops (the 3rd license isnt needed currently) with minimal effort, however the disk recieved immediately needed to download a 70mb update to the program. Which would have been fine apart from the fact that the downloader kept failing - it did eventually work on about the 4th try.
So the program itself, it loads quickly, it is efficent in tracking unknown programs and it basically fulfills its requirements. There really isnt much to add on the operation side of it. It does exactly what it is supposed to be doing, and it does it well.
The only real minor downsides are the need to install a seperate firewall and the lack of network tracking (found this very useful on my desktop for the past year for tracking bandwidth). So I must say that I would advise people to purchase the Internet Security Suite that Kaspersky offer for around the same price on Amazon.
So yes, its a good product, there arent many abnormal properties that other Anti-Virus programs dont have but tis makes the product solid and dependable, just not quite as full as it should be, it meets but does not exceed expectations - which is the main reason I give it 4 stars.
