Some fourteen hundred turns after men first came to Pern rode Moreta, on her great golden dragon, Orlith. It was towards the end of the Pass of the Red Star -- a time when every living creature on Pern was threatened by Threadfall -- when the courage and daring of dragons and their riders was all that kept the planet from extinction. And then, at the height of the battle against Thread, came a new and terrible evil. Moreta, in one last superhuman endeavour, was to save her people, and become the greatest legend of dragonlore until the end of time.

A brilliant emotionally involving novel
I thought that I would find it difficult to pick up the characters as they weren't part of the usual series. I was proved wrong! I found myself deeply involved in the charcters early on and as the story progressed I found myself emotionaly moved by the events, especially the ending which was superb. The start was slower than the other dragon series novels but I attribute that to the fact that the characters were all new and it needed a bit of time to get into them. If you find the prospect of reading a whole series daunting, then this will be a really good read on it's own. Having said that, if you read this then you'll want to read the others!
First one...
....would just like to say that this was the first of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series that I read, when I was about 11 years old. From then on, my fascination with dragons can be laid firmly at her door (though with fantasy in general the award goes to L Frank Baum for The Wizard of Oz!!). Pretty much everything Anne McCaffrey's written I've thoroughly enjoyed; it's a shame that writers of McCaffrey's caliber are so thoroughly overlooked by the mass hysteria generated by writers who are in the right place at the right time, those such as J K Rowling (who has the approximate talent of a goldfish).
Hopefully Anne McCaffrey will continue to spellbind us with her tales of derring-do in the sometimes almost medieval world of Pern, not to mention all her other worlds and characters.
Surprise Ending
I thought the beginning of the book was a little slow- it didn't have the fast pace of some of McCaffrey's other books, like Dragondrums or Dragonsdawn. But I was totally unprepared for the ending of the book, which blew me completely away. This is a good book...
