The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is one of the most important languages for anyone in the software industry to know. The UML is a visual language enabling architects, designers, and developers to communicate about design. Seemingly simple on the surface, the UML is a rich and expressive language, with many visual syntactical elements. It's next to impossible to memorize all aspects of the UML. Just as a writer might require a dictionary to work with the spoken word, so too do UML practitioners require a dictionary of sorts. In this book, you'll find information on UML usage, and also on the symbols, line-endings, and syntax used for the following diagram types:
- Class diagrams
- Component diagrams
- Behavioral diagrams
- Sequence diagrams
- Statechart diagrams
- Object diagrams
- Deployment diagrams
- Use case diagrams
- Collaboration diagrams
- Activity diagrams

Just What The Doctor Ordered
An excellent refresher in UML.
I had used UML a great deal in Uni but had not had much need for it in the following years. With a lot of jobs now requiring UML I felt I needed a concise text in which to refresh my memory as opposed to drawn out lecture slides. The pocket reference did the job of making everything clear in my mind once again (and tought me a few new things).
This book briefly describes the different UML models, their components, how they are used, and their reasons for being used.
The UNL Pocket Reference is exactly what it says - a pocket reference. It is not a manual for the uninitiated. It can teach the basics of the different diagrams and their reasons for being but a more comprehensive text with more examples would be neccessary if you wish to learn UML from scratch or understand how UML should be applied in certain situations.
An excellent first reference
I really can't praise this book enough. This really is an excellent introduction to someone dipping their toe into UML for the first time.
It defines in a very clear and very concise manner the main components of UML.
The book would be of value to a novice user or someone familiar with UML who simply wishes to have a quick reference.
Also, because of its size like the other O'Reilly guides of this format it is great to carry around easily fitting into a jacket pocket.
Top Class
Another fine book from O'Reilly. Perfect for those studying UML at University especially when concerning OORA. It got me through the course. Highly Reccomended.
