just great...I couln't put it down
I discovered D. Gemmell some years ago thanks to a guy in a bookshop. Since then, I've read all of his books as I've able to get a hold on to. This is one of the best...it has some more fantasy and "alternate-world-stuff" than its predecessor "Lion of Macedon" but this doesn't distract from the story. "Au contrair" it adds onto it, making it colourful, descriptive, real fun. The book seems to be very well researched, and it's amazing how the story plot blends into the few storic facts that we know about those times. If you like Gemmell, this one is a must!
A sequel better than the original...
The life of Alexander, and the lands in which he travelled and conquered are beutifully encapsulated in this awesome sequal to The Lion of Macedon. The depth of characters, the vivid atmosphere and the crunching battle sequences allow the reader to almost smell the events taking place! The historical aspects of this text also bear recognising. This is a well researched story, which is complimented by a mysticism that almost fits the beleifs of the period. A Classic.
I don't want it to end ...!!
I'm about 20 pages from the end of this book, which has been such a great read, I don't want it to end - ever!
There's a lot more fantasy and fantastic creatures in this, the sequel to Lion of Macedon. But it works well, and Gemmell, as always, writes superbly. Gripping, sad, uplifting, twisting plot, you name it. It has everything.
Now, back to the book .... boo-hoo!
PS I forgot ... 5 stars and counting.
