My favourite fantasy books
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1) by George R.R. Martin
Buy new: £5.20 / Used from: £2.51
The first book of my all time favourite series. Beautifully written and very engaging.
Tigana (Roc)Tigana (Roc) by Guy Gavriel Kay
Buy used from: £0.21
His best piece so far and none of his more recent work lives up to this standard. However, most fantasy authors never reach the standards of his lesser work so it's all good.
The Liveship Traders 1: Ship of MagicThe Liveship Traders 1: Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb
Buy new: £6.47 / Used from: £0.01
The first of the liveship traders books and showed all the promise of the series.
Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy - Book 1)Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy - Book 1) by Robin Hobb
Buy new: £6.47 / Used from: £0.10
An excellent series that's set to continue.
Fool's Errand: Book One of the Tawny Man (Tawny Man 1)Fool's Errand: Book One of the Tawny Man (Tawny Man 1) by Robin Hobb
Buy new: £5.97 / Used from: £1.40
From this book, the series might actually be better than the original assassin's series. Watch this space.
Otherland: City of Golden Shadow Bk. 1Otherland: City of Golden Shadow Bk. 1 by Tad Williams
Buy new: £6.48 / Used from: £0.01
I suppose strictly speaking this is sci-fi, but the Otherland books are truly original and definitely make the list.
Dark Tower, The: The GunslingerDark Tower, The: The Gunslinger by Stephen King
Buy used from: £0.01
I started reading the Dark Tower series in 1988 and despite getting that Wheel of Time (why am I doing this to myself) feeling every 5 yrs or so, I'm still eagerly awaiting the fifth installment.
Hawkwood's Voyage (Monarchies of God)Hawkwood's Voyage (Monarchies of God) by Paul Kearney
Buy used from: £5.75
The Monarchies of the Gods series. I'm beginning to wonder now why it's so rare to get a stand alone excellent fantasy novel as all my favourites except Tigana are series.
