![]() | A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute
Buy used from: £0.95 Unforgettable. I read this at random, fell in love with it and have never read anything comparable since.
![]() | The Lord of the Rings (3 Book Box set) by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: £11.97 / Used from: £11.37 An absolute classic, and perhaps a cliched choice, but a must-read all the same.
![]() | Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris
Buy new: £5.97 / Used from: £0.01 Less well known than Chocolat, but a much more gripping and addictive story. The twists and turns of the story are a genuine surprise.
![]() | Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis De Bernieres
Buy new: £4.90 / Used from: £0.01 Not the easiest book to get into, but this is both funny and heart-breaking. The dry wit of the characters make the effects of love, life and war come to life
![]() | The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £0.01 Unlike anything I've read. Haunting.
![]() | No Highway by Nevil Shute
Buy new: £6.29 / Used from: £9.99 Another Shute novel. Less famous than On the Beach and several of his other books, but the characters are typical of his sense of honour and old-fashioned deeds of everday heroism.
![]() | The Magicians' Guild: Black Magician Trilogy, Book 1 by Trudi Canavan
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01 Young adult fiction that is just as enjoyable for adults. I love all Trudi Canavan's books, but this (which is the first of a trilogy) is still my favourite.
![]() | Mariana by Susanna Kearsley
Buy new: £5.86 / Used from: £2.34 An unashamedly romantic choice, but truly a great book. I am really fond of Kearsley's writing style, and the blend of history and romance in this book is perfect.
![]() | Pride and Prejudice (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £0.06 One of the few 'classic' novels that really is still relevant and amusing at the same time. Lizzy has all the wit, sarcasm and personality of a modern heroine.
![]() | The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £0.35 Underappreciated. This is a book so few people seem to have heard of, yet in my opinion it is probably the best children's story ever written. Moving, memorable and full of hope.
