Platinum Choral Oldies are still magnificent!!
While no one would contend that this constitutes state of the art recording, some of these performances are, to my mind, unsurpassed performances. The Goodman performance of Allegri is justifiably considered a landmark, and the performance of Gibbons' "This is the Record of John" is one of the most moving I have heard. While there may be cleaner versions of Tallis' 40-part motet, few rival the intensity of Willcock's recording. Ditto with regard to most of the other offerings. These performances have been cherished by many of us for years, and it is great to have them available in the CD format.
Modern recordings do this fantastic music more justice!
At first sight this collection appears to be a bargain with over two hours of quality music. The Miserere recording even comes with a recommendation from the Penguin CD Guide. Unfortunately though, when you start to listen more closely, the recording starts to fall apart. While Decca have done a good job of remastering these classics from the early 60s, this is still a very old recording and it shows, even on a very modern hi-fi. I'd put my money on a more recent recording.
