A Good One for the Bookshelf5

Love him or hate him, with his jovial approach and spontaneous nervous laugh, something that does sometimes grate on me a little while watching one of his many excellent television programmes, nobody can deny that John Wilson catches plenty of fish and his fair share of specimen ones at that. What is more, he thoroughly enjoys himself while he is doing it. Sometimes his methods would make your average match angler have nightmares. Breaking strain lines that a match fisherman would never have in his fishing box, never mind use, unless it was to hang his clothes on and hooks that would hold a side of beef up in a butcher's shop. Nonetheless John is a first rate angler and is extremely knowledgeable. When he speaks (or in this case writes) anyone would be foolish not to listen. Also this is a book aimed at the pleasure angler, rather than the match angler, who are a breed on their own.

This book is aimed not only at the freshwater angler but also the sea fisherman. It introduces the reader to all the latest bait methods and also the latest techniques and angling equipment, which is a feat in itself, because I believe, in fact I am certain that angling equipment evolves faster than any other sporting equipment.

John is also an accomplished photographer and his angling photographs also grace the pages of the book. He has given many tips on photographing fish on his TV programmes and has obviously followed his own advice with the ones in the book, as they are excellent. The barbel on the front cover of the book gives an idea of the quality of fish that can be caught if you follow some of John's tips. It is said that there are more people go angling than any other form of sport, so this book should be a winner.

Top Tips4
I'm not so sure there are 1,001 - John seems to number paragraphs regardless of whether they contain a tip, but that aside this book is packed with good, up-to-date fishing information. Plenty of coarse fishing tips, just a little on game fishing and a good proportion to keep sea anglers happy too. If you found John's laugh on TV irritating, you had better be warned, that insane smile looks out of almost every page! The colour photographs are more for decoration than information but they make each page very readable - definitely a book you can keep dipping into.
