clear and simple...essential!5
As a novice machine quilter I found 'The New Quilting by Machine' invaluable. The book explains the basic stages of machine quilting in clear, step-by-step explanations, from how to use the rotary cutter (always a tricky one), sewing the pieces together, to assembling and quilting the final product.

If, like me, you find it easier to be shown what to do rather than reading confusing explanations, the book contains close-up photos of each step of the way. You really can't go wrong!

The book contains more than 15 simple projects - enough to keep any relatively new quilter busy.

I have previously bought 'The Quilter's Ultimate Visual Guide' (Ed. Ellen Pahl) which is also excellent. The book covers all types of hand and machine quilting and covers a far wider range of quilting tips from numerous different quilters. The explantations are demonstrated in clear diagrams rather than photos. For specific guidance on machine quilting I did prefer the clarity of the photos in the Singer book.

Machine quilting explained.5
This book starts at the very beginning and includes every technique you'll need for your first quilt. It includes bed/quilt dimensions, how to calculate fabric required, how to use a rotary cutter, how to sew the quilt pieces together and in which order, etc. Each stage of each technique is clearly illustrated with colour photographs and has simple directions/instructions. It's a wonderful book for a novice.
