Songlines magazine, March 2008 (#50)
Samba, whether traditional or dance-hall (gafiera), is experiencing a real renaissance in Rio. This has been stimulated in part by the rise of samba clubs such as Carioca da Gema in the Lapa neighbourhood, and subsequent interest from the city's current generation of musical luminaries. Last year we saw the release of Orquestra Imperial's delicious Carnaval Só Ano Que Vem - a project spearheaded by Moreno Veloso and band. And hot on its heels comes this equally sumptuous set of vivacious, delightful sambas from the `old guard' of one of the city's most prestigious Carnaval samba schools - Portela.
The set was compiled and produced by none other than Marisa Monte, who adds her honey-tinged melancholy to several of the tracks. And there are other distinguished guest artists too: Moreno Veloso, Cristina Buarque and the godfathers of modern samba and pagoda respectively - Paulinho da Viola and Zeca Pagodinho. But the result is no potpourri of cameos. This CD is a delight from start to finish: an aural journey of joy and twice as lively and infectious as anything produced by Cuba's much more celebrated older generation.
