Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Third solo album, and his first since 1994's 'Wildflowers',from stadium rock icon and frontman of The Heartbreakers, whom he has led for 30 years. Produced by Petty's former Traveling Wilburys bandmate Jeff Lynne, 'Highway Companion' is aselection of mostly gentle acoustic numbers loosely based around the theme, in Petty's words, of "time and what it doesto you". Includes the single 'Saving Grace'.
Customer Reviews
Well Worth the Listening
Unlike, I think, the other reviewers I am not a long term listener to Petty - just the odd song or cd now and again - so I can't compare it to much of his past output. I got Highway Companion on the strength of a recommendation and I'm pleased that I did.
I liked this cd from the moment I put it in the player. Solid songwriting, well played, and with lyrical and musical twists enough to catch and hold your attention. It certainly is enough to make me want to investigate him further and the only reason that I have given this 4 stars is on the suspicion that there's a 5 star cd lurking in his back-catalogue.
Highway Companion
This is another album of great music from Petty. We see him reunited with Jeff Lynne and there are hints of their old magic at points of this album. Lynne's production is a little smoother this time, less polished than 'Full Moon Fever' is how I can best put it, but still clear and perfectly in keeping with the tracks. This album is definitely a grower and I think some people have been disappointed expecting another 'Full Moon..' or 'Wildflowers', whereas this one is a different beast. Petty's voice is just as soporific and his song writing doesn't seem to diminish. Overall this is a good album, well up to Petty's high standard and worth persevering with as it's gets better with repeated listening.
Less Is More
In some ways this sounds like most other Tom Petty albums, but it is subtly different. Hard to say why. Perhaps it is the stripped down acoustic sound. Perhaps it is the excellent Jeff Lynne production. Noone can produce guitar sounds like him but this time everything is under stated whilst sounding fresh and alive. Perhaps it is the length of the disc at around 45 minutes - to my mind the perfect duration fro a single artist album. Perhaps it is the intelligent lyrics and naggingly addictive melodies. At any rate it is my favourite TP album since Full Moon Fever. Super stuff to accompany my favourite pastime of driving round the backs roads of Provence with the sun roof open. Love it.
