Product Description

Reflecting the current approach to joint postgraduate training programmes in infectious diseases (ID) and microbiology, the Oxford Handbook of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology takes an integrated approach to both subjects. It covers the basic principles of bacteriology and virology, along with specific guidance on individual diseases and conditions, all in the accessible Oxford Handbook style. Practical and comprehensive, this handbook includes coverage of national and international guidelines, together with information on topical issues such as bioterrorism and preventative medicine. Fully reviewed by specialist senior readers, and with useful links to up-to-date clinical information and online resources, this is an important addition to the Oxford Handbook Series.

old information, badly written, out for the money?1
If you are looking for an introduction to microbiology, you are wasting your money. If you are looking for an introduction to infectious diseases, you are in really deep waters: the information in this book is aged, the nomeclature is ancient. No reference to real life information is made. No pictures are available. the format is poor. Buy a Sanford's instead.

Comprehensive and concise, pictures would be good.4
This is a handy compact summary of infectious diseases. It is well laid out and each subject generally gets a 2 page spread which means its easily digestible, with a consistent format.

As a general physicians i've found it very helpful given the frequent presentation of infectious disease to the acute medical take and complications arising in hospital patients.

I imagine registrars in ID would require more detailed texts but the beginner or SHO would certainly benefit.

The other main limitation is the lack of pictures, especially when dealing with skin infections. But then pictures would probably take up too much room in a book like this and i suppose that why they left them out.

Its also worth noting that this is a first edition and i imagine it will be even better with future editions.
