Average customer review:Product Description
This book provides a concise introduction to the increasingly important field of forensic mental health. It aims to set out both the key concepts in forensic mental health as well as the way the discipline operates in the broader context of criminal justice and mental health care systems. It will provide an ideal introduction to the subject for students taking courses in universities and elsewhere, for mental health practitioners in the early stages of their careers, and for professionals from other agencies needing an informed and up-to-date account of forensic mental health.

Review
"'I believe that this will be an invaluable reference guide to anyone who is entering (or thinking of entering) the field, While it may have its greatest appeal to the novice practitioner who wishes to understand the difficult terrain, it will also benefit the more established practitioner provided that he/she is prepared to listen to what it has to say.' basic errors
I was attempting to find a brief Forensic Psychiatry handbook and having encountered other WILLAN publications which were spot on, was interested to see this new one.
I flicked through the book in a shop in order to contemplate whether it would suit my non-medical background or be over-technical (in medical terms) for my requirements. I was SHOCKED to find some basic legal errors within the text. I will highlight p55 only, although there are others, where the criminal justice process is mis-explained, I'm guessing in the interests of brevity, but to a degree which perverts. s136 Mental Health Act is mis-represented in more than one place and the role of medical professionals in police custody, also.
It re-inforces biases within the medical professional in relation to criminal justice which I've experienced to the point of apoplexy, which are to be seen all over the UK. This arises from a blatant lack of legal education for psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and social care staff and it's no wonder such professionals are swearing black is white in partnership meetings with criminal justice agencies when textbooks like this are influencing the academic training of those professions.
Give it a miss, there are others which will better do the trick. Shame ... WILLAN are normally spot on.
