Big Steps for Little People - Celia Foster
This book has an insight into the fostering and adoption world that I cannot help but think would be of enourmous value to anyone thinking of taking this route. I liked the way the back round for the adopted children's lives where written which I found shocking but insightful, indeed I could of read more! The book gives useful suggestions without making it all 'Psycho babble' which many books written by professionals can be, more the tried and tested treatment of what does and doesn't work in some of the most difficult situations I can imagine. A useful book for would be parents considering adoption, adoptive parents if just to compare notes and professionals in both social care and teaching.
A must for any foster carer or potential adopter
This is a really useful book which fills the gap for many carers of damaged children in the care system. Many of the theory books give great insight into why children behave as they do, and what causes attachement disorders, but fail to provide us with the tools we need to help the children address the problems that these create. This book provides that invaluable resource. It is easy to read, with emphasis on the practical case study and has lots of suggestions of approaches to try. It is not at all prescriptive, but gives really helpful strategies.
I am already reading it again in order to commit as much of it to memory so that I can call on its support during those trying times when I just don't know what to do next. Read this and Daniel Hughes, "Building the Bonds of Attachment" before even contemplating adoption and you will feel both more aware and greatly empowered.
Inspirational and insightful
This really is a fantastic book. As well as giving clear, empathetic ionsights into why adopted children can be difficult to parent, the author offers strategy after strategy for healing and loving your children. While I don't necessarily agree with the NLP games she sometimes uses, her love for her (sometimes very difficult) children shines through, and there are so many strategies that the reader is sure to find some that will work or could be adapted for their own kids.
This book is moving, empowering and very helpful at a practical level. Very highly recommended for anyone considering adoption.
