Musical visionary Danger Mouse, iconoclastic filmmaker David Lynch and celebrated rock recluse Sparklehorse have converged to create a project encompassing a full-length album and a limited edition book. They have recruited a remarkable cast to lend their vocals including Flaming Lips, the Pixies, The Strokes, Suzanne Vega and Iggy Pop and even Lynch himself. Lynch provides the imaes that accompany the music, creating his siganture eerie dark beauty in hypnotic photography. The book package includes full sequence of Lynch's images and a foreword by Dangermouse and CDR.

Completing the Circle
I have eagerly awaited all previous Sparklehorse releases so when after Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of The Mountain it was suggested that Mark Linkous and Dangermouse would produce more music together it looked like a hot prospect. When the DNOTS project first appeared as rumors on the net it was intriguing and full of promise. The websites launched and the legal notices opened up and I worried that poor content was being masked by mystery and marketing. Seeing David Lynch associated to the whole bought another course to the meal. If this was marketing it would have been a lead in to major project but it seems the notices were true. The music is easy to come by and should be seen as the root of tree. The intro of the book mention that Mark Linkous prefers to hide is words hence the search for other voices. I would say that this project is more Horse than Mouse and the Static King holds his own reins. A recent main stream newspaper ran their review interview with a picture of Lynch and Brown on the cover and only two mentions of Linkous. This artist is in it for the art for a change.
The book is an interesting project. At the original published price I would have expected something with slightly higher physical production values (better binding, heavier papers etc) but for original content it's top class. David Lynch has avoided overt nudity, violence and smoking (not that he has to on my part) for a cryptic expansion on the non-narrative lyric content of the music. Only the `Jakob' set looks like to song. Having see these I had hoped for Catfish swimming in their own entrails in the sink but maybe I'll shoot my own version. Of course the images are full on Lynch and if you like Inland Empire, Mulholland Drive & Lost Highway you will not expect to be handed an explanation in the closing chapter.
This is very interesting cross over project that none of the involved needed to entertain doing for any other reason than that they could. So, as with all great art, as long as it serves no function other than just to exist, it is truly great art.
