Hopelessly Outdated
The Internet moves so fast that I make a point of not reading anything published more than 12 months ago.

After having read this book, I now realize that I should not read any 'Second Edition' that has not been 'Fully Revised and Rewritten'.

The first edition of this book was published in 2001. After reading it, it appears that there have been very few changes to the book over the last half decade. The only reference I could find to anything having happened over this time was the mention of the fact that one of the contributors died last year.

Much of the content of this book is a collection of stories along the lines of "Joe Schmo was living in a cardboard box and eating catfood when, in 1998, he discovered this new-fangled thing called the Internet and was soon making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year from it".

Had Joe Schmo tried to do the same things in 2006, he would still be living in the box and eating catfood because it's a lot harder to find an empty niche now than it was back in those days.

Most of the 'marketing secrets' revealed in the book involve the heavy use of marketing by email. Whereas this was a great tactic to use back in 2001, I fear that it is a great deal less effective now that spam has increased 50-fold since it was first written.

The overall result is that there is very little information here that can be successfully applied to an Internet start-up in 2006.

If you were unaware of the fact that there is a site called eBay and that it is possible to make money by selling stuff on it, perhaps this book could be of interest, as this is one of the more revolutionary 'new' ways of making money described in the book, then maybe it is worth checking out. For those people who haven't been living in a cave for the past decade, however, there are much more useful purchases in this field to be had.

Possible, but be realistic
Is making money on the Internet possible without leaving home or even sleeping? Yes, it is, but Internet on its own is just a vehicle to conduct business that wasn't there before. Years ago, there probably was a book titled How to Make Money Using the Telephone. This book shows its readers the possibilities out there in the electronic space, but the way for the author to sell this book is to make people believe that:

* It's easy
* It's fun
* It takes little work
* It's profitable
* It creates financial freedom

If you believe the above points, then you can just keep dreaming. All of the things in this book are possible, but creating an internet business requires a lot of work, time, and dedication. Yes, it can be profitable, and create financial freedom. The work, of course, can be done by someone else. True, but these people would need to be paid, and if a reader is picking up this book, it is highly unlikely that he or she has enough money to pay people do the work. Don't get discouraged, but be realistic. That's all.
