Product Description

One-Day French - the DVD is the latest way to pick up all the French you'll need to get the most out of your holiday or business trip. Join Andy as he learns French from a fellow passenger on his flight out to Nice, and see him putting it into use when he arrives, sometimes with hilarious consequences. Then, meet Elisabeth Smith, the UK's best-selling language author, as she shares her language-learning secrets. This one-day course is specifically written for the holiday maker for whom a short holiday does not justify a complete language course. It teaches only basic, core words, as few as the holiday maker can get away with, and a few useful phrases, which will be supported by body language - no pronunciation guide, no grammar summary. The course is fast and light-hearted and reflects the anticipation and excitement of going on holiday.

Customer Reviews

Fine if you have a 'Carry On' sense of humour!1
I was amazed when I realised this CD was made in 2004 - it feels more like something from the 1970's! I couldn't get through it as, within five mins I wanted to scream! The two presenters have the most cheesy script imaginable, coupled with Andy's pathetic leering over an imaginary air hostess, unwitty jokes, and Elizabeth's predictable 'Oh Andy....!'. Not to mention the ridiculous fake background story where Useless Business Man flying to France doesn't even have the most basic French but 'happen's' to be sitting next to a woman with an annoyingly posh and patronising voice who decided to waste her flight time teaching Usless Business Man basic French.
It's a shame about the ridiculous set-up and script as the conversational French the CD teaches is good. My kids and I were looking forward to learning basic French over the summer hols but they switched off as soon as they heard Elizabeth's patronising voice and Andy's pathetic imitation of a confused Englishman.
Surely we can do better than this?!!

Excellent apaert, as someone has said, for the humour4
First time around, the humour's OK. On a second playing, it grates.
If you also have the Spanish one, which is exactly the same (except for being in Spanish), the humour will really annoy.
But, that said, this is excellent. It teaches you the basic stuff for talking to people almost without you noticing.

Excellent except for the time wasting "humour"4
Before using this I had previously used the Spanish CD and found it very good, except for the "humour" of Andy Johnson (who plays the role of student). The DVD format has allowed an expansion of Andy's "humour". It is even more annoying. If you can ignore it, the package is a good intro.

The second disc is worth the full cost of the package. Andy Johnson impersonates a Frenchman who speaks 'Allo 'Allo English and teaches French pronunciation. He does that very well...and he is even funnier than anyone in the TV show. Both very helpful and absolutely hilarious.
