More a general information book about living in France
I would agree with the other reviewer totally. As we are thinking of moving to France with two small children, I bought this book under the assumption it would give some advice on intergrating the children into a new environment, but this isn't really the case. It does go into some detail about the French education system, but this is more general information and can be obtained elsewhere on the web. However, it did provide an interesting read and some useful tips.
Some great points - but a misleading title
I am moving to France shortly with my four children and bought this book for some helpful hints. I enjoyed the book, and it does give several helpful pices of advice, but it is not clear from the title that the author acutally had her children while living in France - her children never had to go through the process of actually moving there - they simply had English parents while being brought up in France. Although this brings its own issues, the title of this book lead me to believe that I would be reading about a family who had moved children from English schools to French ones, and that is certainly not what this book is about. Having said that, I enjoyed the read and gained a good deal from the information within on education etc.
A Book To Reassure You!
An extremely readable, practical guide for those facing the daunting prospect of uprooting the family and immersing them into a different lifestyle in a new country. This is a book to dip into at leisure; the useful tips are based on common sense and personal experience. Lighthearted and optimistic in tone, Moving To France is an enjoyable read with some delightful anecdotes on various faux-pas and learning experiences to fit in to French culture. Most useful is the detailed section on the progress through the education system; as an English teacher myself I was fascinated by the different philosophy and approach to teaching and learning. Ms Power's view on this topic is,to a large extent,non-judgemental and it is inspiring to read how much interest and effort she has taken to help her children enjoy the most out of their educational experience.
