Customer Reviews
Not as bad as a lot of people are making out, but far from perfect
It is been quite a while since I last played a snooker/pool game and this is the first 'full price' game of such on the PS3, so I was eager to see what it turned out like. First things first the graphics have been 'amped' up considerably, but still not on par with the bestest sports games out there (such as NBA 2k9, Tiger Woods, etc. The sound and music are not great and John Virgo's 'expert' commentary is pretty poor and extremely repetitive. The playability is not quite up to scratch, but if you perservere then you get addicted. Online at the moment is poor and buggy, but hopefully patches will be released soon to fix this.
Overall its a good game that could have been better, and considering all the delays it still feels slightly rushed. Perhaps best to rent it first to make up your own mind.
my review
A few reviewers before me have given this game a low rating because of things like poor character likeness, bad crowd animations etc., but it's what is going on on the snooker table that counts, and this is a game worthy of 5 stars. It's a very accurate simulation that can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. Personally I like the aiming aids switched on to make potting easier, leaving me to concentrate on the positional play, it makes you feel like you're 'up there' with the professionals.
One thing about this game though that is really annoying, and made me give it only four stars, is that there is no option to save the game 'mid-match'. So if you're going for the full simulation and make it all the way to a final, you find yourself having to play a potential 35 frames of snooker in one sitting....switch off the console before the end, and you lose everything! Sorry but I've never got a full day (and probably half the night too) to play a full match. That's when 'entertainment' becomes more like hard work. Shame, I thought the developers might have realized this when they created the game some 6+ years ago. Apart from that though, it's a very good game that I highly recommend.
Overly harsh reviews
I have to say some of the reviews for this game are overly harsh. Yes the game has a few bugs especially the online mode but I'm sure we'll see a fix from blade in the near future. A few reviews on here criticise the character models. I'll agree they're not to a FIFA standard but I'm pleased they've spent more time on the table and balls. Ive bought a snooker game to play snooker not look at ronnie's likeness. As for the sound I think the reviewers here haven't even bothered to look in the options menu where you customise ALL sound volumes and even how frequently the commentry is played. The ball sounds for me DO vary depending how hard you hit the cuebal with the cue and also into other balls. I especially like the coughs from the crowd which create more immersion. For overall enjoyment of playing a virtual game of snooker this game is right up there. Recommended.
