Fritz for the PS3 not so bad4
While I respect the other review on this page - obviously from a serious chess player - as a more casual player Fritz is fine. It can go strong enough for the majority of players, and the Adventure (such that it is, being simply challenges given to the player by various chess pieces, normally Mate-in-2 and the like) is fun; with the Queen's challenge (she swaps the back ranks around at the start) quite taxing (in other words, I haven't beaten her yet).

I've played this program twice against the freeware PC program Arasan (version 11.4) and Fritz was beaten, but not without a struggle when Fritz was set to ELO 2100. In other words, there is a pretty strong chess engine there, and considering the limited RAM of the PS3 (but compensated for by the multi-processors?) this is a good score in my book.

So, in a very limited field of chess programs for the PS3, Fritz is well worthy of your attention.

Fritz Chess PS33
This game provides a good range of opponents, a library of 2000 classic games and a fair few game modes. On the downside the graphics are a little low res, there's no online play, and you can't properly tilt the 3D boards as the view is fixed. Still its only £15. Its a decent little game if you like chess.

No good.1
Compared to Fritz 11 this chess game is very poor indeed. What confuses me is that the first company to really make a real go at producing a very good chess based game for the PS3 will sell millions of them and yet they always fall very short. Even Chessmaster gets hammered by reviewers on a regular basis year in, year out. The simple fact is, unless the companies who produce these chess games learn from and involve the very best chess software designers then chess on the PS3 will always fail. It's time a software company made a really serious effort to make a GREAT chess game for the PS3 but as yet it hasn't happened and this version of Fritz Chess fails badly. It might take time and perhaps some serious investment and real know how but the first company to get it right will corner the chess market for the PS3 for good. Sorry to be so negative being the first reviewer of Fritz Chess but the fact is, this game is very poor.
