Customer Reviews
Comprehensive security software.
I set about installing McAfee Total Protection 2009 on my laptop this morning, I uninstalled PC Tools Internet security first and then started the McAfee install and all seemed well at first, the program installed and updated but after a couple of minutes running McAfee I was faced with a warning notice telling me my subscription had expired?? The protection had also been turned off.
Having had McAfee installed BEFORE the PC Tools software I thought this must be something to do with it, I uninstalled Total Protection and after a restart I ran McAfee clean up tool, which can be downloaded from McAfee's web site, this cleans out any remnants of previous McAfee software, stray product keys and registry entries.
After another restart I set about installing Total Protection 2009 again, this time all went well with no subscription problems, the latest updates installed automatically and the security centre started running.
You can install Total Protection on 3 computers, you have to have an online account which you create after the installation process.
McAfee Total Protection 2009 looks no different to McAfee's internet security 2008, it is probably under the skin where the differences lie, more powerful virus scanning and a stronger firewall. The program seems to work just as well as previous versions, OK so my laptop is not cutting edge and is a couple of years old but McAfee sits in the background without slowing it down in any way. It does slow boot up time though.
I like the network management feature of McAfee , you can see exactly what computers and additional devices are connected to your network and if there are any intruders hacking into it, you can block any unwanted computer or device on the network by marking as a friend or intruder, if you just don't want your Son or Daughter to access the network or the internet then you can block the PC that they are using.
McAfee Site Advisor is another good feature, warning you of fraudulent web sites, adult content or virus likely sites with a simple traffic light system, I missed this feature with PC Tools Internet security.
As the title of the software suggest it is supposed to be total protection and is a very comprehensive package, so includes anti-virus, anti spam, anti spy-ware, firewall, anti phishing, indentity theft protection, parental controls, McAfee site advisor. There is also a bonus software that you can download, McAfee anti-theft encryption software that gives your valuable files password protection, but is a 30 day trial!!
Backup and file recovery utilities are included in Total Protection 2009, but these have been included in previous McAfee internet security versions.
Time will tell if McAfee Total Protection is as the name suggests but I have been fairly pleased with McAfee's software on previous occasions, and doubt there will be any problems, their customer support is very good with live online chat with technicians that can help with any problems, I had a problem with my McAfee online account and this was sorted in no time through the live chat system.
The installation problems were probably my own fault, having not run the clean up tool before hand, but the slow boot up time after installation takes a star form my rating.
Great software - Great price!
This is my second year of mcafee security and it does not let down. The interface is fantastically easy to use, and stays firmly in the background, only letting you know its there if it brings something to your attention. I like this as with Norton, I couldn't stand the annoying updates windows!! It is easy to request a quick scan, or even a deep clean of your computer and registry. Other feature I found useful was the tabs to overpower windows defence systems and use the much more useful Mcafee software. It also lets you help set up a network, and keeps this protected, ideal for more than one pc in the house. It even gives 3 pc's protection for the year. However, do note that the year starts for all 3 pc's as soon as the first one has it installed. At the minute is half price, you will be lucky to find it cheaper anywhere else in my opinion.
Does the job
Like some other reviewers on here I found this has slowed my PC down significantly (although I must add that my PC is a couple of years old now so I guess it's nearly obsolete! & will probably need updating before too long), which mean that I probably won't be using this particular software for long.
On the plus side, I've had no program conflict issues with the McAfee software, as I did with the last similar product I tried (Norton), so I'd consider it in the future just for that.
To be honest I'm the type of person who doesn't believe there's a great difference in software of this nature, I could be wrong but I feel that as long as you have some protection software you're generally going to be okay, so really you pay your money and take your choice. I'd guess that once you've found and used a product that you're happy with you'd stick with that specific brand. So if McAfee is your current brand then I'm sure this will be fine for you, if it isn't then just stick with what you're comfortable with. As long as you trust the protection software you have, that's the main thing.
