Customer Reviews
I still don't really like norton....
But this was easy to install on a laptop, requiring some protection. I'm no techy but it seemed less insidious than the complete internet security package. Use instead of the full package, it seems to improve things.
Excellent job and Excellent value for money
First of all before buying Norton Anti Virus you can evaluate it by simply going to the trusted site at www.download.cnet.com and downloading the trial which has been increased from 15 to 30 days so
you have more then enough time to evaluate it but you'll have to provide your email address.
On my Vista PC with Dual processor and 2 gig of ram it took about 10 minutes to install and input the
Product key. I started a full scan after which took about an hour but this is only necessary for the first time then you can do a quick scan and leaving out the trusted files which Norton marks at first and this speeds things up vastly. After a full scan it found 10 tracking cookies with low to high risk so I am glad it got rid of them especially the high risk.
Today I did a quick scan and it took about 5 minutes so pretty fast to say the least and no threats either. I also noticed that the program had also carried out 3 scans earlier automatically and it carries these out when the PC is not busy so it wont interfere with burning CDs or watching TV, streaming etc.
Plus, unlike other antivirus programs I've used in the past, Norton explains info about CPU and memory resource usage to help you prevent future infections and keep your PC running fast. I compared this (CPU usage) with windows Task manager and it was very accurate indeed plus you get the added bonus of knowing what each running process is and because Norton covers other grounds like spyware, rootkits, bots, you dont have to install any additional software. The licence allows you to install on upto 3 PCs too pretty fair compared to some programs. For £20 money well spent.
Not bad but....not the best!
First of all, Norton will offer you great all round protection. Just looking at it from that point of view you won't find much better, but remember this is just Norton anti-virus and not the internet security suite.
Having said that however, there are plenty of other options that will provide you with equaly great protection, but many will also offer you better system performance. The problem with Norton (as has been the case for many years) is that it uses a lot of system resources and will inevitably slow down your system, and if you use an older machine this can be crippling :(
Of course, all security packages will slow your machine to some extent as it is in their nature but Norton always has been one of the worst, and despite efforts to improve on this factor, the problem is still here.
Having used Norton internet security suite 2010 for a few weeks I decided to give this a try and remove internet security and let windows 7 deal with the rest and I have to say there is a marked improvment due to this only being antivirus/spyware. It's still more resource intensive than many other options available but is certainly perfectly workable on a newer machine.
If you have a top of the range PC and are willing to pay the price, then yeah go ahead with Norton..but if you have an older machine or you don't want to fork out for the protection, their are plenty of other choices available, including some very comprehensive free options such as Avast and AVG.
Overall...not bad, but not the best either in protection or performance
