In this much-needed new book, Darina reconnects you with the cooking skills that missed a generation or two. The book is divided into chapters such as 'Dairy', 'Hens and Eggs', 'Bread and Preserving' and forgotten processes such as smoking mackerel, curing bacon and making yogurt and butter which are explained in the simplest terms. The delicious recipes show you how to use your homemade produce to its best, and include ideas for using forgotten cut of meat, baking bread and cakes and even eating food from the wild. The Vegetables and Herbs chapter is stuffed with growing tips to satisfy even those with the smallest garden plot or window box, and there are plenty of suggestions for using gluts of vegetables. You'll even discover how to keep a few chickens in the garden. With over 700 recipes, this is the definitive modern guide to traditional cookery skills.

Best Cookbook for many years !!!
This book is wonderful,I know most of the skills included as I grew up in the 1950's,when everyone grew their own produce, kept hens, and cooked from scratch.Since then I have grown and cooked for more than forty years. The book has everything you need to know, and much more to do the same.I am a fanatical collector of cookbooks, and have more than five hundred, this will be one of the most used and loved.
I've just ordered 15 copies!
For anyone interested in food and - in particular - in rediscovering the traditional way of doing things this book is a must. Beautifully presented and packed full of information (not to mention recipes) I have just ordered 15 copies to give away to family and friends this Christmas. The last time I felt so excited about a cook book was when I first read Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's 'River Cottage Cookbook'. This is very much in the same style. Can't recommend it enough.
