Synopsis
It goes without saying that the story behind the written story is an achievement in itself. Rarely has this been more true than in author Margaret Marean Wheat's case. Any inquiring person who has worked with the Indian peoples of the West will testify to the difficulties of obtaining the information he seeks. They are an old, proud and reserved race, and acceptance of the outsider is not freely given. In her twenty years of painstaking work with the Northern Paiutes, Margaret Wheat earned that full measure of acceptance. The keys to this achievement lay in her understanding, her gentle but dogged curiosity into the old ways, and a rare sense of humour. "Margaret Marean Wheat is a native Nevadan, born in Fallon. She attended the University of Nevada, where her bent of interest was in geology. She served with the US Geological Survey in 1947, has been a field worker in archaeology for the Nevada State Museum, and has undertaken projects in water resources for the Desert Research Institute of the University of Nevada. She has also had the unique experience of being a fire-lookout in the Toiyabe National Forest.
