Editorial Reviews
From the Author
The HOUSTON CHRONICLE writes, "[DROPSHOT] has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the end. The prose is lean, the story moves briskly, and the dialogue crackles.
Like fellow wisecracking PIs Spenser and Elvis Cole, Myron Bolitar is great fun in the best `hard-boiled' tradition. His one liners and observations are consistently amusing and frequently laugh-out-loud funny."
MOSTLY MURDER adds, "YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK -- DROPSHOT backhands the competition."
THE ARMCHAIR DETECTIVE said DROPSHOT had "a fast-paced plot, witty dialogue, more than a few surprises, and you'll-never-guess-it denouement."

Myron Bolitar returns
Myron Bolitar is an injured basketball player who tries his hand a being a sports agent. He also manages to combine this witha part time caeer as a PI! Drop Shot begins with a young tennis player who has desperately been trying to contact Myron, being shot dead at a tennis tournament. Myron feels guilty that she had been trying to ask or tell him something so begins to investigate and discovers a link to the murder of a senators son 6 years before. His friend Win (financial adviser and part time heavy)warns him that he may well be getting into more than he can handle but is there to help when needed. Keeps you guessing right to the shocking end. If you enjoy characters like Kinsey Millhone or Stephanie Plum this has a similar humour, with the rattling good story line.
Game Set Almost Match
I enjoyed this book. Please don't think that it would be a waste of time to read it, for it definitely wouldn't. I lost half a day gently flicking through its pages, but then I wasn't in search of the next great 20th Century novel; I just wanted something to read on the tube.
So why only the three stars then? Well, that is purely down to personal taste, in that I prefer a Detective Inspector over a Private Eye. Having said that though I far prefer Easy Rawlins from Walter Moseley than I do Inspector Morse. I think the bottom line has to be; "Would I re-read this book?" the answer is no. Again, don't get me wrong, it is a very readable book, with an intriguing link to the tennis world through the eyes of a PI investigating a murder. I can only reiterate though that I will not be reading it again, and I believe that this is again purely a matter of my personal taste.
I recommend this book to all who enjoy good pulpy american fiction with a light touch where it is needed.
Good but an obvious ending
`Drop Shot' is the second book in the Myron Bolitar series, written by Harlan Coben. The story begins when during a big match at the US Open, a tennis star is gunned down and killed. The lead suspect is the player who was playing on the main court during the shooting. The suspect is also Myron's client, so he goes on the hunt for the killer, getting on the nerves of everyone involved on his way, which leads him to an older murder from six years ago.
I recently read the first book in the series, Deal Breaker, and absolutely loved it and started reading this immediately afterwards and although the story was fast paced and exciting, with some excellent characters and some wonderful and witty dialogue, I had guessed who the killer was and what the twist was about 100 pages into the book, so everything that was happening was just building up to what I had quite easily worked out at the start. This is a shame as, like I said, it is a very well written book from one of the best US crime writers in recent years. There is still a lot of twists and surprises that I didn't see coming, some which did shock me, but I was nearly screaming at the page for Myron to realise what was happening here as it was so obvious.
I'm still going to give this book 4 out of 5 stars as it was a very enjoyable read that I flew through in no time and was genuinely hooked from the opening page, but it was just way too predictable to give it the full 5 star rating. I look forward to reading the rest in the series and just hope that they are a little harder to work out next time.
