Endless enjoyment
This book is a delight, both in the writing and in the physical manifestation. A collection of magazine pieces about food and travel may likely seem a slight confection, a tuft of candyfloss maybe for undemanding summer appetites, but not so here, for the magazine in question is 'Gourmet'. This is rich stuff, full of wonderful descriptive passages, as you'd expect looking at a list of writers including M.F.K. Fisher, Madhur Jaffrey, Claudia Roden, E. Annie Proulx, Paul Theroux, and Elizabeth David. I owe my exposure to this book to a very good American friend who sent it to me as a birthday present. My deep thanks to her for I know I will read it again many times, though perhaps not as in the first instance, cover to cover in a single session, for that was rather gluttonous. This is a book full of subtle and perceptive observations of life, of people and of places, which can bear repeated reading.
And as suggested earlier, there are physical pleasures in handling the volume, for this is part of the Modern Library series, with crisp type on good paper well bound - pages easy on the eye and silky to the touch.
Oh, and there are even some recipes.
