Excellent Product So Far.....
I used the Scala Rider Teamset for the first time today. I had done a fair bit of web research on this and other similar products and the comments I'd found had been mixed - difficulty activating, poor volume etc etc. I was a little sceptical mainly because this was a comparitively cheap system and heard my maxim of 'buy cheap, buy (at least) twice' ringing in my ears when I ordered. However...it arrived promptly, well packaged and had a quality feel to it. It was easy to fit to both a closed face Shoei and open faced Arai helmet. The speakers take a bit of test and adjusting to get correctly placed but easily done and velcro holds fimly in place. Semi read the simple instructions as I played with it and linked easily to my blackberry mobile. Pre bike trial worked ok although you have to talk for a bit to activate - 2 or 3 words needed but you soon get used to it. At this stage the negative comments I'd read about volume seemed to ring true but once on the bike the volume was perfect at motorway speeds. All in all first impressions are of a top quality and reasonably priced product, does everything I wanted and honestly better than I'd expected. My wife said we've never talked so much in years; it took a bluetooth gadget to bring us closer!
Good kit, but apalling audio quality.....!
I've had this piece of kit for just over a week now and, I have to say, it does exactly what it says on the box. No problems with set-up and only a brief read of the (simple) manual allowed all facilities to be used. Intercom, voice dial, 3-way conference all work fine and people I talk to on the 'phone tell me that all they can hear is my voice, with ambient noise effectively cancelled. The auto-volume adjustment also seems to work well in all conditions I have tried so far.
However..... there are a few drawbacks! I ride three types of motorcycle; a moped (for to and from work), a big trailie and a Harley. I also have a Garmin ZUMO GPS which I have used on all three bikes with both a wired connection and now the bluetooth connection of the Scala. With the wired connection of a really cheap intercom system (£4.99 from Lidl), the audio quality for 'phone and MP3 and are pretty good, with workable but noisy intercom. In comparison, the Scala is OK on 'phone and intercom, but apalling on MP3 and voice directions from the GPS. The speakers are very tinny with no bass and no depth; MP3 is a joke and voice directions are completely drowned out by the tinny whine of the moped, the wind noise on the trailie and the deep rumble of the Harley. Fitting better speakers might be a solution but I don't know what this would do to the battery life and there is no 12V charging facility so, when touring or camping, battery life may become an issue.
A good set-up for communication but, if you want MP3 and voice guidance for cruising, long trips and those relaxed rides, look elsewhere.
Great product
I have had the teamset now for about 6 months and my wife and I love it - as one person said, it does what it says on the box. You need to work with the placement of the earphones to get the best sound (something I think people don't realise that this is an issue with the ear and not the device). You also need to practice to get the voice actuation to work but it does seem to connect to everything. Also someone said it doesn't have a 12v charger but I bought one with a dual charging set here on amazon for about £6!
