A beautifully crafted depiction of the Yukon and sled dogs.
Whether you have driven your own dog team in the Yukon as I have, or would like to get a true feel of life in one of the worlds most remote and beautiful places, this book is for you.
John Balzar paints a stunning account of the wilderness that confronts the Quest musher and their faithful dogs. Travelling more than 1,000 miles across pristine landscapes he describes the highs and lows of the race competitors. You will learn how a dog team and musher combine into an inter-dependent unit. The courage, stamina and friendship of the dogs unfolds amid the snow and ice.
I found myself recalling the exhilaration of riding the sled runners and marvelling at the Northern Lights dancing overhead.
As John actually follows the mushers during the race you feel intimately involved, sharing their thrills, successes and dispair.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to understand and appreciate dog mushing.
The book is a wonderful and absorbing read.
For further reading I would suggest 'Honest Dogs'
which follows the same race but from an actual participants point of view.
