Star of his own television series from 1964 through to the early 1980s (the show traditionally closed with Val singing a song whilst seated in a rocking chair, which prompted the self-mocking album title Val Doonican Rocks, But Gently, which topped the album charts in 1967) Val was voted Television Personality of the Year on three occasions. As a singer he enjoyed fourteen chart singles and eleven albums, the most recent of which was 1990. Whilst he has been largely in retirement for the last ten or so years, he still makes the occasional appearance.
