Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Genesis still have a credibility problem which at present just trails the present standing of ex-drummer/vocalist Philip Collins. Duke was the record that shed their 'heavy prog' image and found them beginning to loosen up. Collins had grown in confidence following Peter Gabriel's departure and theband immediately became much tighter musically. In additionto the hit singles "Duchess", the buoyant "Turn It On Again" and realism of a situation in "Misunderstanding", there isthe painful honesty of "Please Don't Ask". There have been many bigger Genesis albums, but none have anywhere near as much heart.

This is the future of Sacd/DVD? YES PLEASE5
What a glorious Fathers Day gift, fair enough I chose it. Genesis sacd + dvd, well I was warey as I have been bitten twice before with this sort of format. First time with Dave Gilmour's offering, On An Island a red spine version. It turned out as a disappointment, AOL sponsored promotional jamming session. That was still better then the most dire one, that belongs to Jean Michel Jarres Aero, where the dvd is of some french actresses eyes conveying..... whatttt? To the music..... boring, even before the novelity of flashing at the telly wore thin, with these emotion free eyes, no response, yawn? Thankfully this has restored my belief in the Music or at least Genesis giving the true fans something for nothing, to whet their appetite on Genesis back in the 80's. Forgive the dated fashion, oh the Hawaiian shirts, I had half a dozen and yes Phil Collins comfirms it that you do look a tw#t in one.

Genesis have raised the bar of what to epect in this best buy, yes you get a good interview in how they made the last truly great Genesis album. I found out that at last Genesis has dropped the Blues Brothers toe curling medley for this years tour. But a bit conflicting on facts that Mr Collins claims he had Face Value finished by the time they recorded Duke. Strange that? As Behind The Lines appears on Face valve, but you can forgive him as he gave them Misunderstanding, though he did offer In The Air Tonight, yeah Phil.

So you get the great Duke, you get Duke in 5.1. Three video's Duchess, Misunderstanding[ the one where he is on the phone ] and Turn It On. Also a world tour programme 1980[not so hot]. The best bit is......

Live At The Lyceum London 1980. It does look dated, but bear with it, apart from Mike Rutherford shady playing on the beginning of Dance On A Volcano. Daryl Stuermer playing his socks off, enough eighties hair and flair , but keeping tight to the original songs. Chester Thompson playing brilliant, you must see the duelling drums on Dance On A Volcano/Lost Endos, never boring. Tony Banks playing with the wizard of quick fingered Rick Wakeman, but in parts better. Phil and beard singing at his best and drumming to the highest level that only Chester can get there. Great!!
Mike Rutherford does improve, but is rather lack lustre. Looking more like Anthony Phillips than Anthony Phillips. Shut you eyes when they are playing songs you could imagine Steve Hackett playing this music.

A joy to watch these superb musicians playing, hopefully happy times, though Mr Collins was going through heartache. Can you think of someone better then Mr Collins controlling the Drum machine, the throbbing pulsating green lights, Brilliant!!!

Genesis' best album5
The arrival of the first batch of Genesis SACDs is reason indeed to open the champagne!
"Duke", in my opinion, is their best album with the right mixture of classy shorter tracks and longer instrumental powerhouses. "Duke's Travels/End" just can't be bettered, and throughout the whole album the SACD sound is thunderous, a huge improvement on past editions and formats. The DVD has Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 mixes plus "live at the Lyceum" concert highlights. Highly recommended.

Pop when it was good5
Many people think that you can't be a fan of early prog rock genesis as well as later pop genesis. I have always thought this was ridiculous. The band had a big change in direction but they still produced good quality music.
This is the best pop music i have heard in a long time! You can't help but sing along to tracks like "Behind the Lines", "Duchess" and "Turn in on again". Other tracks like "Heathaze" and "Cul-De-Sac" show off some of their more imaginative lyrics and the whole album finishes with two epic instrumentals which are just brilliant.
The DVD features are, to be honest, not up to much. Not by any fault of the DVD itself but because the videos for "Duches", "Misunderstanding" and "Turn it on Again" are just laughable and Phil Collins looks awful. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Phil but these videos are not interesting at all. What is interesting is the live footage and the interviews which give an interesting insight into the making and release of the album and also show how the songs translate onto the stage.
Defineatly worth buyin. Worth every penny. Pop Genesis at its' best. Invisible touch is worth a listen as well.
