Never go on holiday with friends
Well written and absorbing, this book takes a relatively ordinary situation - two families sharing a holiday villa - and makes something special out of it. Claire and Robert and their two children are let down by the family they usually holiday with. On the spur of the moment Claire invites a friend from her university days - Frances - her husband Oliver and son Tom to share the villa with them. The relationships between them the undercurrents and un-voiced resentments and misunderstandings are well portrayed. The characters are realistic and the holiday atmosphere is beautifully described. Will there be a major falling out? Will the children get on? Will the chores be shared out evenly? If you're thinking of going on holiday with people you don't know well - read this book first! I enjoyed it.
A totally absorbing, sensitively written book
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Sue Gee's novels to date and this was one of my favourites. It is a beautifully written book, sensitively portraying the difficult emotions and relationships of the characters within it. The story was totally absorbing and I could hardly bear to put the book down.
