The Gwynns, a pleasant American couple, have lived outside York for the past fourteen years. Nesta, their only child, was born there and attends the local school. They seem ordinary enough and comfortable in their leafy suburb. But they have an astonishing secret unknown even to Nesta. One evening when she sees her father diminish and disappear into a stone lily pad in the garden pond, Nesta has to be told what she really is. Her parents are visitors from the planet Ormingat, sent to Earth to investigate life there. Now they have been ordered to return home. Like Space Race, Earthborn has a gripping climax as to whether her parents - with the dubious help of the police - will track Nesta down before time runs out for them.

A lovely family reunion
Nothing weird or surreal about this book at all - it's just science fiction. A nicely executed story (with an interesting twist) on the age old theme of a child brought up in a different culture from her parents' and who can't bear the idea of being uprooted to go "home" to their planet.

Strange...
This book was weird. I'm not sure if I liked it or not. It's about a girl called Nesta, and she finds out that her parents are from a planet called Ormingat, and that they have to move back there, and so she runs away as she doesn't want to. I had to give it a rating, and so I put it in the middle. "I am earth born and earth bred" says Nesta. "I am not of this earth" says her mother, Alice. This book is not of this earth. Its surreal, very surreal...
