I Love Lola!
I loved this book so much!! Its not very often that I read a book and actually laugh out loud. I have read that the author, Claudine Cullimore, didn't consider this book to be "chick lit", but it definitly has all the elements of a chick lit novel. A young woman, at a crossroads, decides to make a difference in her life. Figuring out what to do and how to do it is the problem. But unlike most "chick lit" novels, this book does have more of a backbone. It has a deeper story about families and how we all get along. I loved every character, but her mother is fantastic! I am dying for a sequel!!
Charming and Fun - a teeny complaint, though...
I want to love this book. In fact, I may love it. I surely do love the storytelling style employed by Ms Cullimore. She uses very funny "flashbacks" (which are really small stories in themselves) to help the reader understand just why Lola and her family are the way they are (loony!). The family is eccentric without being unbelievably over the top and you can truly understand the dilemma that Lola finds herself in - suddenly she's 28 and has no direction in life and doesn't quite know how that happened. My main gripe with the book? It's a romantic comedy - and Lola deserves better than Tom, her "dream guy". Oh, Tom's nice enough (rich, great looking, polite) - but for the first half of the book, I honestly kept expecting Tom and her brother JP to come out of the closet together! I truly did! (The way her life was going, it would have been perfect!) Ultimately, he's a bit wimpy. But don't let that stop you from reading this quirky little family tale. Maybe we could get another book, Lola Leaves Home and on the way, Lola can find some nice former priest?
So funny - haven't read anything like it!
I picked this book up because of the cover, which I really liked. it's about a girl who comes home to Ireland and it looks back at her childhood with her family who are really scatty. what a great book this is! It's really funny, sweet and charming - and not like a lot of other books like this which are out there, and are very formulaic where you know what's going to happen. this is really sweet, i couldn't put it down, and i really loved all the characters!
