Product Description

Wilf wants to be a witch's dog. His friends don't think he can as witches don't usually have dogs as pets - they have cats, spiders and bats. But when Wilf sees an advertisement for a witch's pet he decides to apply. He disguises himself as a cat which nearly works until his disguise falls apart. But Weenie the witch hasn't had any other applicants and so decides to give Wilf a try. He helps Weenie with her flying and her spells and ends up as Witch's Pet of the Year at the Annual Show.

Customer Reviews

Good for young readers5
This book is aimed at age 6-8. I'd have thought that 8 year old and possibly 7 year olds would find it a bit easy.
I got it for my nearly 6 year old who is at Level 3 on Oxford Reading Tree. She needs help to read the book, but is enjoying having a go while I prompt her when she gets stuck on the words.
There are about 40 pages, all of which have one or two cartoon style pictures on them. The first few pages have a couple of sentences on them and by the end of the book there are 5 or 6 sentences per page.
A lot of the words she knew, the others she attempted to "sound out". I feel the book is giving her confidence in her reading abilities. More importantly she is enjoying it and finds the story funny(I don't find it too bad either)!

A cute story about a cute dog..4
The Witch's dog is a charming and witty book for young children. Wilf the dog is the main character and his adventures with Weenie the Witch will keep many children enthralled. With large, bright pictures and only a few sentences per page, it is excellent for children who are still gaining confidence in reading. It encouraged my 8-year-old daughter to read on her own, an activity which she had found difficult and boring before she discovered this book. I also read it to my class of 7 to 8 year olds and they all loved its original storyline and funny illustrations. Frank Rodgers is set to become a favourite author in our class. I would reccomend this book for children aged up to 9.

The Witch's Dog Frank Rodgers5
My daughter is 6 and on Oxford Tree level 4. She picked up the book this weekend and was so excited that she could read a book that wasn't a 'school' book that she's spent the whole weekend practising and re-reading. She obviously loves the story. I help with the more difficult words but she's read the whole book through at least three times in two days. I realise that different children respond to different triggers but this book has definitely worked for her. I think the fact that the story is more involved than the school level she's on and is fun with lots of illustrations has also helped. We'll definitely be buying more in the series.
