Product Description

Published in the shadow of the Spanish Civil War, The Revenge for Love is a political thriller attacking the fraudulence and feeble-mindedness of life in the Britain of the 1930s. A brilliant satire on a world that has lost its sense of self and been seduced by the appeal of Communism, it is one of a handful of books (it could be compared to OrwellÂ’s Coming Up for Air or KoestlerÂ’s Darkness at Noon) which defined a particular mood and to todayÂ’s audience gives an unparalleled sense of how Europe turned toxic on the eve of the Second World War. A major statement by a great artist and writer The Revenge for Love now deserves a new generation of readers and is the perfect introduction to LewisÂ’s work.

Customer Reviews

Sex and Politics5
A sardonic look at upper class lefties in the 30s. Brutal prose. Lewis understands the darkness of the human heart as well as, say, Green or Waugh, he writes as well, but here he is, neglected as ever, even on Amazon (where people would review an elephant's fart) without a review - at least til I have stepped in. If you are considering a Lewis book, this (along with Tarr and Snooty Baronet) is one of his most readable.

Very modern style - doesn't date at all. Lewis's art is good too. He is misanthropic, I'll concede. If you are looking for a writer full of the milk of human kindness, then, Wyndham is not for you. On the other hand if you think might enjoy the company of a prose master, with a healthy contempt for the apes of god Lewis is your man.
