It's a long hot summer. Temperatures are soaring and a strange creature has been spotted on Dartmoor. Connie Lionheart and her friends soon discover that the creature is a chimera. When it attacks Connie, leaving her gravely wounded, Col and Rat must rescue her from hospital: she needs treatment beyond the knowledge of mortals. But a weakened Connie is easy prey for the evil shapeshifter Kullervo. He believes that, finally, the time is ripe for him to seize her Universal power, gather his army of mythical beings, and wipe out humanity. The battle between him and Connie will be a fight to the death. And the prize will be the future of mankind.

Cursed and blessed
At the end of July the world went doolally when the final Harry Potter book came out. A month later, The Chimera's Curse was published to no fanfare at all. But I'm sure I'm not alone in having enjoyed this fantasy adventure series about magical powers just as much as the one about the boy wizard. This series is always going to compared with HP - the similarities are many but to me, the idea of a Society for the Protection of Mythical Creatures is more exciting than a school for wizards.
The plot is much tighter and the conclusion far more satisfying than that of HPATDH. Kullervo is more of a real threat than Voldemort ever is. Even the jacket illustration is infinitely better.
loved it!!!!!!!!!!
Julia Golding is a marvelous author and has written lots of brilliant books, but this one is my fovourites. it is the end of a series called "Companions Quartret". All of her books are the best i've read in ages. this ones my favourite because all the things i wanted to happen happened, but i can't say what these things are because without ruining the book but i'll say this much, id give it 9,000,000,000,000,001 stars out of 5!!!!!!!!

A good, solid read
It is a shame that this series has never received the attention from the literary world that it deserves. Very few people seem to know of it. While it may not be as long and as massively epic as some young people's fantasy these days, they make for digestible reads and leave the reader feeling satisfied. While the overall conclusion of the series was inevitably one of triumph, as fantasy novels almost always are, I didn't expect the manner in which it was concluded and it leaves me wishing Golding would write more books just so we could read more about a certain character and their later exploits (I don't want to give away TOO much). It seems that Golding's stumbled upon a world that she could grow much bigger if she wanted to.
