Ineffable riff
Out of his depth, yet shallow; showy-offy yet thin; neither scholarship nor art. I must confess to not being a Flaubophile, having been overexposed to his heavy brocade at the Uni, along with Cervantes' flimsy - OH NO, he's on to Cervantes now! (Has anyone else actually read the entire work in Spanish? Other than Spaniards of course - and I wager rather few of them, voluntarily.) T misuses 'quixotic' on p30, by the way; but when he threatens to set his sights on dear inoffensive Georges Perec (p68) alors la I have to part company with him. Who on earth is Thirlwell addressing? He means to dazzle, but he will bore a scholar and bemuse (ie bore!)the common reader. (Of course, he is addressing himself!) Nice pics tho...
