Change of heart
I often read reviews, but I am not very often moved to write them. Anne Enright's novel 'The Gathering' so annoyed and disappointed me that I made an exception on its behalf. Basically, I felt she was doing a poor impression of A.L.Kennedy, whose writing I admire so much. This seemed especially true in the sexual candour department, which in Enright's case seemed slightly forced and clumsy.
It was therefore with very low expectations that I borrowed this collection of short stories from my sister. I am delighted to say that I have pretty much changed my mind. I am not quite finished this book but so far, every new story defies my inclination towards skepticism, and there is something here which(for me)resonates in a way I have only previously found with Kennedy and Raymond Carver.
I still think someone owes a lot to someone else's style, but now I'm not sure who is emulating who.
