very high quality... short stories
Patricia Duncker made a big splash with HALLUCINATING FOUCAULT - a superb first novel and these short stories are well up to scratch, and I speak as a novel reader who usually can't be bothered with short stories. 'The storm' is an extraordinary tour-de-force of poltical critique and the quality of her writing never fails. I read this book through in 24 hours.really very good.
Interesting but not gripping tales
I absolutely love Duncker's novels, but I'm afraid I wasn't really grabbed by these short stories or the novella contained in the collection. They're certainly well-written with a wonderful hint of sinister mystery throughout, but I didn't warm to the characters as such. That said, the short stories are edgier and sharper than the novella, which I have to admit to skipping through, though it does have a very good & punchy end.
Still looking forward to the next novel!
