The first story in the acclaimed Wolf Tower sequence. Orphan-slave Claidi knows nothing but the House, with its lavish extravagance, mindless ritual and cruelty. Then Nemian, an enigmatic prisoner, promises escape and safety if she will free him and journey to his city through the wild and savage Waste. But nothing is as it seems: a tribe that yearns to fly, a city ruled by dolls, clocks that are Gods, strange forests, marvellous beasts - and the nomadic Hulta with their young chief Argul. Most menacing of all, the Wolf Tower broods over Nemian's stone city, ruling a deadly game of chance with the spin of the dice. But no one is ready for Claidi's passion for freedom, her bid to destroy the Law once and for all ... (20040501)

Amazon.co.uk Review
Orphan slave, Claidi, has only known life behind the hallowed walls of the world of the House and the Garden, suffering beatings and shamings by the ruling families who live in decadent luxury. When that world is threatened by the arrival of a handsome and rather sleepy Prince, Claidi is ordered to rescue him. With the luscious prince in tow she embarks on a fantastical journey which takes her through the savage Waste, towards the promise of ultimate freedom from her slavish chains and into the realm of the imposing and darkly mysterious Wolf Tower.
Tanith Lee is a force to be reckoned with in the world of fantasy fiction and here, in Law of the Wolf Tower, she turns her expert hand to a tale filled with strange and exotic landscapes, lost princesses, handsome princes and a journey through time which is unremittingly mesmerising from beginning to end.
A bewitching, utterly delicious fantasy adventure filled with the promise of freedom and romance, Law of the Wolf Tower is a stylish, cleverly executed book that takes young readers deep into an imaginary land where everything and anything is possible. (Ages 9 and over) --Susan Harrison

On recent evidence, pirate stories look like being the next big thing. If so, may they all be as much fun as this one, by the Cat's Elbows! (Jan Mark, The Guardian )

enjoyable read
I just finished reading the first of this series and am excited to read the rest. It was just released in the States and I am glad I found it. Cladia is an appealing herione and seems to be realistic in her reactions. The settingwhile fantsastic is not unfimilar and leads to the realism Overall, very enjoyable read for young girls.
A gripping novel; I couldn't put it down
This book is written in first person, which makes it feel like you are really there. The vivid descriptions and colourful imagery also add to this sense of depth and feel. You are not told precisely where this book is set, but this only adds to the feeling of mystery that the book gives off. Claidi's character is strong, but confused about which path she must take; whether it be with Nemian, the handsom but rather lonsome traveller, or with Argul, the tall dark leader of the bandit tribe.
The end is rather surprising, though I shall not give it away for I do not wish to ruin it for anyone who is thinking about reading the novel, for I thoroughly recomend this to anyone who likes children's fantasy writing.
One of Lee's best - read when you need to smile!
I am a big Tanith Lee fan, so grab any new book of hers when I see it. This may be my favourite yet (Black Unicorn runs it close though). Told in diary form by escaped slave Claidi, it is a frequently hilarious whirlwind narrative that is difficult to put down. Lee creates a colourful, eccentric world, which is further developed in the equally fine sequels. It is impossible not to fall for Argul, one of the most attractive heroes I've ever come across. But Claidi is the star, and I cannot emphasise enough how much fun this book is to read, even the scenes in the nightmarish Wolf Tower. Guaranteed to put a smile on the face of any reader, whatever their age.
Oh, and the cover art for this series may be my favourite ever!
