It was just a game, a test of bravery; the devil's footsteps, thirteen stepping stones and whichever one you stepped on would tell you how you would die. Yes, just a game like a skipping rhyme, and nobody ever died from a skipping rhyme. But it's not a game to Bryan. He knows the truth. He's seen the Dark Man, because the Dark Man took his brother five years ago. He's tried to tell himself again and again that it was his imagination, that the Devil's footsteps are just stones and the Dark Man didn't take Adam when he reached the thirteenth step. But what does it matter if people believe in the legend or not. Adam's still gone and now it's time Bryan proved how ...

From the Inside Flap
It was just a bit of fun, a local legend. The Devil's Footsteps: thirteen stepping stones, and whichever one you stopped on in the rhyme could predict how you would die. A harmless game for kids - and nobody ever died from a game.
But it's not a game to Bryan. He knows the truth. He's seen the Dark Man, because the Dark Man took his brother five years ago. He's tried to tell himself again and again that it was his imagination, that the Devil's Footsteps are just stones, and the Dark Man didn't take Adam. But what does it matter if people believe in the legend or not? Adan's still gone.
And then Bryan meets two other boys who have their own unsolved mysteries. It seems that Adam wasn't the first to disappear. Someone or something is after the children in the town. And it all comes back to the rhyme that every local child knows by heart:
Thirteen steps to the Dark Man's door,
Won't be turning back no more...
From the Back Cover
THIRTEEN STEPS TO THE DARK MAN'S DOOR,
WON'T BE TURNING BACK NO MORE...

One in Fire, two in blood, three in storm and four in flood...
One in fire, two in blood, three in storm anf four in flood, five in anger, six in hate, seven fear and evil eight, nine in sorrow, ten in pain, elleven death, twelve life again, thirteen steps to the dark man's door, Won't be turning back no more!
It's a harmless childrens skipping rime. No one's ever died because of a rime, have they?
Bryan knows someone who has. Bryan saw it happening. Bryan was there. In the woods. By the stepping stones. In the clearing. With Adam. But there isn't any Adam any more. And there's never going to be. He was taken by the dark man. That's it. Full storp. No turning back at the thirteenth step!
Bryan has been living in ignorance for the last five years. Five years of silence, five long years of parents who've cried to much about their first son to care about what happens to there second. And every night there are nightmares.
But one day, Bryan meats another boy. A boy who's broken the whole broundry of silence around the village, the dark man's village, Redford. A boy who speaks of the silence, and want's to stop it. A boy named Smokey.
And on a trip to the library, another boy. A boy who's best friend was taken away from him one year ago. A boy who also want's to break the silence. A boy who has been investigating the disappearences of children since Lucy dissappeared. A boy named Jake.
The dark man watches over three places. An old house, said to be haunted by a gohst, an old patch of land round behind he station, and the woods. No one ever forgets the woods.
The three boys are on a mission. But who's to say they'll suuced. After all, a man who has the power to control your imagination has far more experience than three boys who fall into the wrong hands. Three boys with pasts, presents...and possibly futures!
(This book is really scary and I got so freaked out my head was under the covers even when I was reading it in a well lit room next to my cats and mum. I would rekamend that if going to be read by child, have parent read it instead!)
Step Carefully!
This is a wonderful book and just perfect for the Halloween season. A chilling tale about a child's rhyming game and a local legend that come together to create an action packed story. Thirteen steps to the dark man's door, won't be turning back no more . . . that's how the rhyme finishes, and at that point is when Adam, Bryan's brother, vanishes. The dark man has him! What strange tale do the stepping stones hide? What secrets does the haunted house hold? What happens in the woods? This book is filled with suspense and is a nail biting read. A terrific read that people of all ages would enjoy.
