Sebastian Darke has the world on his narrow shoulders. The son of a human father and an elvish mother, he is desperately trying to become the family breadwinner and has taken on his late father's job - celebrated jester, Prince of Fools. Trouble is, Sebastian can't tell a joke to save his life. Dressed in his father's clothes and accompanied by his talking (and endlessly complaining) buffalo, Max, he sets off for the fabled city of Keladon, where he hopes to be appointed court jester to King Septimus. On the way he encounters a tiny but powerful warrior called Cornelius; the beautiful Princess Kerin; blood-thirsty Brigands and enough perils to make him wonder why he ever decided to leave home. This is a hilarious and swashbuckling adventure!

Customer Reviews
A superb swashbuckling action story with heart and humour
Philip Caveney's first children's book is a rich and funny tale that will delight children and adults alike. The unlikely heroes of the story are Sebastian Darke, a wannabe court jester whose only problem is that he's rubbish at telling jokes; Max, his trusty buffalope, who carries the world and a big chip on his shoulders and gets all the best lines; and Cornelius, a mighty, fearsome warrior, who just about comes up to Sebastian's waist. Add in a beautiful princess, dark derrings-do at the most elegant palace in the land, hordes of marauding Brigand ruffians and a malevolent old witch and you've got the ingredients for a perfect fantasy tale, told with perfect wit and pace. This book is bound to be a classic!
If you like Shrek, you'll love Sebastian Darke
This is the classical fairy tale szenario with a twist - and has very strong remnants of the 'Shrek' movies. The humour is similar and there is a sarcastic, donkey-like companion to the hero. Very good, very funny and definitely something to tie you over until the fourth Shrek movie comes out!
