Absolutely Fantastic!
This hardcover volume contains the complete works of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It contains "A Study in Scarlet", "The Sign of Four", "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes", "Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes", "The Return of Sherlock Holmes", the acclaimed classic, "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "The Valley of Fear", "His Last Bow", and "The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes". It really is the complete complete works. It tells of Watson's first meeting with Sherlock Holmes and all the small case they solve (or rather Holmes solves, Watson goes "ahhhh")
The whole book is attractively bound and would make an excellent gift. The hard back cover and dust jacket make it look like it's worth alot more than Amazon charge!
I would recommend this book to anyone, and I mean anyone. Most people who haven't read Sherlock Holmes turn their nose up at it. I was the same. Then I read it! After all, it's elementary, dear reader!!!!!! Sorry, couldn't resist!
Real quality at a very reasonable price
"The Complete Sherlock Holmes" is a splendid big volume containing the whole Canon, with a good selection of the Strand Magazine illustrations and a foreword by David Stuart Davies. It's a lovely production: full-cloth binding, all gilt edges, head and tail bands, ribbon marker, and section-sewn. My only adverse criticisms are that no artists but Sidney Paget are credited, though at least six illustrated the stories after his death in 1908 (and one of Josef Friedrich's pictures has replaced Paget's in "A Scandal in Bohemia"), and that some illustrations are a mite grey and fuzzy. Over all, this is a beautiful book, a pleasure to handle and a pleasure to read.
Atmospheric, outstanding performances!
This is an outstanding collection. Both Clive Merrison (Holmes) and Michael Williams (Watson) bring these characters to life like never before, with both wit and drama. You will chuckle out loud at Watsons dry remarks during Holmes frustrating periods and his asides are either excellently scripted or inspired add libs. Merrison as Holmes captures the character throughout the series and it is a study in character acting as Holmes journeys from his first case to his final bow, allowing Holmes at times to be more than human. The real winners though are excellent scripts, direction and superb supporting casts who should not be underestimated in their contribution. Charles Augustus Milverton, The Final Problem, the Empty House & the Speckled Band are great examples. Finally the atmosphere created with the excellent effects transport the listener to the scene with clarity.
If quality is what you are after you will not be disappointed. This is the entire Conan-Doyle collection and includes The Hound of the Baskervilles. Brilliant!!
