Ann Brashares is a best-selling novelist who started her career as an editor. She lives in New York and is married to an artist. They have three young children. She loves to travel and she does have a favourite pair of jeans from when she was at school, but she admits they don't fit her any more.

One of my favourite ever books!
When I bought this I didn't expect it to have such an impact on me. But as soon as I read the first page I had to read to the end and couldn't put it down! It has a realistic, funny, moving and deep plot which isn't apparent at first. But after a while you realize that there is much more to this book than you first thought! It follows 4 girls summers and it is their first summer apart from each other. At first everything seems fine - Carmen going to visit her dad, Bridget going so soccer camp, Lena visiting her Greek family and Tibby staying at home. But for each of them nothing turns out quite as expected and there are some very unexpected and exciting turns in the plot. This is probably the first book that has made me laugh out loud and cry. It is the kind of book you can read over and over again and never tire of it! I would recommend it to anyone, especially teenage readers. Without a doubt a full 5 stars.

One of the best teen reads of all time
Just as Carmen doesn't initially care for the Pants (jeans) in the opening stages of this fantastic book, I bought "The Sisterhood..." as part of an offer with some other books - and it lay unread on my shelf for quite some time. But when I finally got round to reading it, it instantly became one of my favourite novels.

The plot of the book is original and simple: four best friends spending their first summer apart, and a pair of jeans that travels between the four of them, thus keeping them all together despite the miles. Bridget spends the summer in soccer camp in Mexico, where she finds a challenge to her unrelentless spirit and energy. Lena goes to Greece with her family and meets a boy...but in true style, things get a lot more complicated. Carmen is visiting her Dad, but when she gets to South Carolina she finds a lot more than she bargained for. And Tibby stays home working at a local supermarket, spending her spare time making a film, and meets someone who changes her view on life in the most unexpected way.

Ann Brashares has a brilliant way of telling the story in a detached way, but making you feel completely involved with what's going on: by the end of it I felt emotionally wrung out but really satisfied and happy. All the characters are brilliantly written: you respect them, and look up to them, but Brashares is keen to emphasise that everyone has their faults and yes, sometimes this does lead to problems. Sentimental? Yes. Overly cheesy? No. An inspiring novel which just demands to be re-read!

A well written and realistic book for teenage girls
Generally I dislike teenage books which are aimed exclusively at girls, usually finding them unrealistic and too boy-obsessed. However, I had heard a lot about this novel in particular, all of it praise, so decided to give it a go.

This novel is about “The Septembers”: four girls whose mothers became friends when they shared an antenatal class together. The girls’ mothers have grown apart and no longer see each other but the teenagers still keep in contact. In fact, Bridget, Carmen, Lena and Tibby spend their summers together, and are very close friends. This summer is different however, it marks an important time for the girls – it’s their first summer without each other. Bridget is going to an all-girls soccer camp in Mexico. Carmen is going to see her father (who is divorced from her mother) in South Carolina. Lena is visiting her grandparents in Greece with her sister Effie. And Tibby has a job lined up at home. The girls are all excited yet apprehensive about the thoughts of spending their summers without each other. So when Carmen finds a pair of jeans which fit all the differently sized girls perfectly, it seems like a sign. They come up with a set of rules surrounding the jeans and decide to send them to one another throughout the summer as a lucky charm.

I really enjoyed this novel, mainly because the characters were so realistic and believable. The novel is not written in a sickly sweet way nor does it attempt to use masses of lengthy description which wouldn’t be suited for this particular story. The plot itself has several twists so keeps you wanting to read on and you get to know the characters to well you find yourself caring for them and wanting to know what the book entails for them.

I recommend this book to teenage girls (as expected), especially if you’re someone who usually likes stories about friendship and overcoming problems. However, I would recommend it to any female of any age as it is a very enjoyable novel with wonderfully crafted characters. A book I would also recommend it “The Bad Girls’ Club” by Rhian Tracey, which is about four very different girls who have a book club, the only different is – they have to discuss the books live on a popular radio show!
