A collection of taut and violent stories. Whether set in the combat zones of Vietnam or the intellectual milieu of an elite New England college, they reflect an almost brutal vision of the human condition in a world without mercy or redemption.

Bare-knuckle brilliant
Thom Jones is a former Vietnam Marine and boxer who exploded on the American literary scene in the early '90s and won the National Book Award for this collection. He has since written two more books of stories, but for me 'Pugilist' remains his best. Jones has a punchy, conversational style that nonetheless manages to convey great poignancy and rare honesty in his tales of brutalised 'Nam vets, psych-ward outcasts and disaffected lovers. Jones' is a sort of "trailer park" America, the lives that rarely get seen outside of cliches or talk shows, but his voice is tough, poetic and authentic. For my money, Jones is as good a short story writer as the English language has at the moment.
NEVER AT REST, IN YOUR BOOKSHELF!
Every story is a little handcrated masterpiece. Thom Jones' life is pure literature, spanning from drama to real funny stories. This book enters among the top ten of american writers.
