An often hilarious black comedy
Farewell Waltz is a great tragi-comedy. Kundera keeps the reader engrossed with the sheer pace with which the action unfolds. The characters are intriguing and surprisingly complex. The issues dealt with are varied and relevant to modern life. If you want the opportunity to laugh whilst being made to think then this one's for you!
Destroying illusions
This book does not have any mercy with anybody. It dissects people's thoughts and motives, and coolly destroys the illusions they have about themselves and their world. It shows a network of manipulation and illusions among several characters in a small spa town, during five consecutive days. Apart of being an in depth study of human characters, it is also a good description of the mood and atmosphere in the Czech Republic during the communist years.
