Breath deep the air of medieval England.
Mr. Shipway has provided us with a doorway to the 12th century experience. His scholarship on matters both medieval and military is unquestionable. His characters are fully realized and compellingly complex. Against a breathtakingly detailed tapestry of life in England during the Norman period he spins a tale rich with the splendours of war and intrigue. This is not a romance nor a medieval fantasy but, rather, a window onto a passed way of life. He takes characters and situations from the shelves of history and blows the dust from them, breathing vibrant life into figures that should not be lost. He manages to instruct and enlighten while entertaining. Of the countless historical novels I have digested, "Knight in Anarchy" is one of the very few I can reccomend without reservation to the historian and general reader alike.
