In May 1997, ex-SAS soldier Will Scully and his former regiment, known as the "Pilgrims", pulled off what the American ambassador called "the biggest emergency evacuation since Vietnam". In Freetown, Sierra Leone, they were caught in a military coup, their hotel under siege. This is his story.

An excellent account of one man's ultimate bravery
Being Spanish, I have the highest regard for the SAS, as anyone would. This book was recommended to me by someone, and I can say I was captivated from the beginning to the final word. Apart from the most compelling account of Will Scully's experience, it was written in such a realistic way, I also felt I was right there dodging the bullets on the rooftop. The tremendous courage Will Scully showed throughout his harrowing experience, and the obvious skills he had to overpower the whole coup single-handedly, in the end resulted in him saving a thousand or more lives.
One must also take into account he was not sent by the army to carry out this mission, but instead saw he was the only one capable of saving these lives and took it upon himself, knowing his capabilities, to successfully take control of the situation on his own.
I would not describe Will Scully's book as fiction. There is no room for imagination when you have a true story like this to write!
The only thing I can't understand is why it took the Government so long to recognise Will Scully's bravery in awarding him the Queen's Gallantry Medal.
A gripping story told by an incredible character
This is a fast paced, easy read and I really could not put it down. Will Scully comes across as a likeable character you can generally relate to but he is different......
Having travelled to several potentially dangerous areas of the world I could just about relate to what he and the rest involved were going through. But the way this character reacted to the circumstances and repeatedly risked his life for fellow members of the human race is completely astounding.
Its difficult to know whether people like Will Scully have natural abilities which make them react the way they do in the face of death or whether this is all down to SAS conditioning and training.
Either way Will Scully is an incredibly brave and focused man and his book is a very good read.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys travelling or working in the more volatile areas of the world, people with interests in world affairs and those who enjoy the SAS related books.
I hope to read more from Will Scully in the future.
If you think you've got guts.... prepare for a reality check
Will Scully, former SAS (AKA the pilgrims) is one truly brave bloke. I felt I was in the Hotel with Will frantically keeping the hoards away while all around people were cowering in corners. When you get into this book you can't help but feel, well, helpless. You almost want to be there to lend a hand but secretly you know you probably haven't the bottle.
