Product Description

Richard and Lelia's child is conceived in a moment of giggling chaos as they dress for a Christmas party. They arrive rudely late and still glowing, and barely register a slight, drab woman in the hall. Sylvie. As their baby grows, so does the presence of Sylvie - she seems to be nowhere, yet everywhere, harmless yet sinister. Richard is seduced by her subtle, inexplicable charm, while Lelia, struggling with Richard's sudden ambivalence towards their baby, finds that she is haunted by painful memories. And Sylvie remains as invisible as she wants to be - that is the source of her power. Beware of mice.

She plunges headlong into sticky themes of desire, love and hatred, uncovering the unpalatable parts of the psyche with an unflinching eye. Mice are, indeed, to be avoided at all costs. In fact, having sex at all is probably ill-advised' Sunday Times 'Seductive, scary and almost frighteningly readable' Julie Myerson

Jonathan Coe, The Guardian

Customer Reviews

a truly fantastic summer read5
I bought this book because I'd read raves about it by Jonathan Coe and Julie Myerson, whose books are so great, and am SO glad I did. I can't recommend it highly enough.
It's completely gripping, sexy, funny, dark, beautifully written, with a very strong sense of place and an amazing eye for the secret thoughts we barely admit even to ourselves. For anyone who's ever even contemplated having an affair, or fears that others might, or is simply interested in a fantastic read that takes you deep into the secrets of the human heart and won't let go, THIS is your holiday reading. You won't be sorry

unmissably good5
This is the most gripping book I've read in the last few years. It's completely unputdownable! I was up most of the night and then grabbed the novel again first thing in the morning. It's all about a relatively happy couple and a third person who worms her way into their lives, and into the lives of their friends. But there's more to it than that - the plot reveals totally unexpected links with the past. It's sexy, exciting, disturbing, and I couldn't recommend it more strongly

Amazing novel5
This is everything you could want an enjoyable intelligent novel to be. Completely gripping story, sexy, funny, gorgeously written, full of brilliant observations of London and relationships...I literally could not put it down. Don't usually buy books on the basis of reviews but the ones for this convinced me and I'm so glad I did...and I don't normally review books online either! Read it and you'll see why I couldn't resist!
